Our girl Gemma Holland headed down to Sydney a few weeks ago, to get
some shredding in before she heads over to New Zealand next week on the
N-Tense.D.Centz Tour. Here is what she had to say about the first part of her
trip, Pt. 2 is coming soon!
Maga
Mcwhinnie local Sydney ripper decided to organise a girls only skate weekend,
which would involve skating all of her favourite spots before she headed over
to Peru for a holiday. Some of the Brisbane girls planned to make the trip down
but super last minute Aki got called into work and Phoebe had an unfortunate
accident injuring her knee. So it turned into a one woman trip.
It
just so happened that Jacko's 'Sector 9 Wild Wild West Race' was on the same
weekend Gemma said 'I had decided I was going to compete not really knowing how gnarly
the hill was'. So here we go, it was around lunchtime when she left
Brisbane, and if it wasn't for Triple J she might of lost her mind before she
even got there.
After
13 hrs of driving, Gemma arrived at Abec 11 Australia HQ to pick up so goodies
for the weekend to come. "Cheers heaps Tony for all the Zigs and
Flashies!"
A
few more hours of driving and Gemma arrivied at the Barnyard just in time for
breakfast (that couldn't of worked out any better). After a quick feed, everyone
made there way over to the hill. After driving down the hill Gemma's first
thought was 'that this is too gnarly for my first race of the year'! But
thankfully Jacko put it in to perspective reminding her that she did drive
15hrs so she might as well skate it. Her first run was as slow as she
could go, allowing Maga to navigate her down the run but as it always goes
hills always look scarier than they are. Classic Gemma, she was stoking hard
and now it was time to race.
You
really never know what is going to go down in a race! In her first heat Gemma
ending up getting boxed in with no room to footbreak so it was all or nothing,
don't worry she made it out alive. As the day progressed she started to catch
people in the straight and ending up making it into the top 16! Well done
Gemma!
"Cheers
to Jacko, Basement Skate and Sector 9 and all of the helpers for making this
event happen!! Really got the Stoke flowing through my veins again!! Also huge
thanks to the McWhinnies for the hospitality!"
Here
is a quick little video that Gemma did up of the race! Make sure you look out
for Part 2 of Gem's trip to Sydney, more girls, more laughs and more skating!
